貞観政要

The "Jogan Seiyo" is a famous collection of political questions and answers that describes the correspondence between King Taizong (reigned 626-649) of the Tang Dynasty and his famous assistants. Taizong settled a number of wars and laid the foundation of the Tang Dynasty. His reign is famous in Chinese history as a period of peace, and is called the "Reign of Jeongguan" after the original name of that time. This book has long been a favorite among leaders, and is said to have had a great influence on various figures in Japan, including Masako Hojo, Ieyasu Tokugawa, and Emperor Meiji. The most distinctive feature of this book is that it does not focus on the methods used to gain power, but on how to maintain it beyond that. According to Taizong, it takes a different kind of effort to get the top position than it does to keep it. In order to maintain his position, Taizong always tried to be disciplined and cautious, and was always ready to accept advice from his subjects. In this book, the importance of having such an attitude is repeatedly stressed through various episodes. It is interesting to note that Taizong himself is often seen in this book trying to act or make decisions that go against his own beliefs. Nevertheless, he was able to admit and change his behavior when he was wrong, which is probably the reason why he was called a great ruler. There is no such thing as a perfect person from start to finish. This book, written more than 1,000 years ago, is filled with words that are still applicable today.
