As part of another graphic design exercise, I wanted to design a static streamer overlay.
As I did not have any useable full body illustrations as a placeholder, I opted to illustrate a full body sprite and do some character design again (something I seldom get a chance to do). Most (if not all) of my character designs end up being a one-and-done deal as I like to spend more time fleshing out any details and determining the overall colour scheme.
For the design of the vtuber, I mainly wanted an excuse to draw something semi-techwear related and researched some various outfits: from loose-fitting asymmetrical tops, baggy jackets and skirt designs, or outfits with an obscene amount of buckle clips and straps. Just something that I could use or incorporate into the design.
The design of the character herself didn't really have much thought put into it, but as I had already completed a proof of concept for the streaming overlay and with it utilizing a geometric triangular pattern with a neutral grey/ blue colour swatch, I experimented with creating a crystalize/ icy aesthetic.
Her name, "Mashiro Naname" is probably the least original one I could come up with: Mashiro for the obvious "pure white" -- because of a polar bear's fur coat. "Naname" on the other hand was a harder one that I settled on. Polar Bears are sometimes referred to as "nanook", based on the Inuit term, "nanuq" (lolwikipedia). But "nanook" doesn't really transliterate into "nanuki" which really isn't a real term either and instead picked "naname" because it vaguely translates as having a slanted view of the world -- which I associated with the polar bear's current conservation status as being vulnerable and have that sort of play to her personality of being somewhat moody at times.
