These two works were created with the aim of accurately depicting the target organisms.
It has been several decades since I first thought as a child that I wanted to draw pictures for illustrated books. In the past year or so, I have had the opportunity to relearn what it means to draw pictures for picture books. I realized that even when I thought I was drawing accurately, somewhere along the way my hand habits got into the picture and I often drew things based on my own assumptions.
The mushrooms are juveniles of a species called Amanita ibotengutake, which means they are just beginning to grow. When they get bigger, the pileus turns dark brown, but because they are young, the whole area is still light and fresh. I painted one of the outbreaks near my home using transparent watercolor and other materials. The pencil sketches show the front, the side and the flight of the Japanese tit. They were drawn on gray paper and the white areas were done with dermatograph. The watercolor of the tit was exhibited in the web exhibition of the Guild of Nature Science Illustrators.
There are still parts of my work that are in the process of being completed, so I would like to further develop my skills while exploring methods of expression that are friendly to a variety of people in the future.
