Awkward Hugs Zine

Since this zine is one 8.5x11 inch paper folded up, I was struggling to think of what to make. We could do whatever we wanted for this assignment, so in the end I decided on a humorous route. I like to give awkward hugs (with consent, and to people I’m close to), so I decided to catalogue some of my favorites.

The zine was originally just titled “Awkward Hugs,” and the back page (the final image) was the front. At my profs recommendation I switched them around, because it would be funnier to pull someone in with the idea of a nice hug, then surprise them with these awkward hugs.

I tried to portray the character giving hugs as an image of myself, while the other people are just random (unfortunate) people with basic designs I made for the zine. Most people have an uncomfortable reaction, even when I warn them I’m giving them an awkward hug, so I drew them with discomforting expressions.
